At the end of October 2019, Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb) launched an architectural competition for the new media building.
The winning design by Baumschlager Eberle Architekten impressed the expert jury above all with its careful treatment of the listed building, the opening to the urban space and a transparent, sustainable new building.
combine supported rbb during the competition in determining the requirements and drawing up the functional specifications - both of which served as the basis for the invitation to tender to find a construction partner - and finally accompanied the intensive examination of the design.

To be able to work in a networked and cross-media way, to be able to produce smart, we need different and flexible spatial contexts.
rbb director Patricia Schlesinger

In January 2020, 14 selected architectural firms submitted their competition entries for the new building.
One of the tasks was to design a building that adapts to the changing workflows and processes in media production. A jury initially selected three prizewinners, who revised their design according to rbb's specifications: HENN, Steimle Architekten and Baumschlager Eberle Architekten.
The new building at the Berlin site is scheduled for completion in 2025.
rbb director Patricia Schlesinger: "All three offices have once again worked extensively on their award-winning designs. We would like to express our gratitude for this extraordinary commitment. rbb benefits greatly from the creativity, passion and willingness of the architects in an exciting competition. I am delighted that we are now continuing to work with Baumschlager Eberle."
The new building will provide around 13,000 square meters of space for cross-media work and production processes under one roof, thus intensifying cooperation between radio, online and television. The online area in particular is to be strengthened.

"In order to be able to work in a networked and cross-media way and produce smartly, we need different and flexible spatial contexts," Schlesinger continues. "The newsroom is the journalistic heart of our digital media house. It's where we bundle our news, where we work in new workflows for digital products and make ourselves fit for the future."
The new building at the Berlin site is scheduled for completion in 2025.
